Description
Some people would love to have as much fame as does this "Century Tree" on the Texas A&M campus in College Station, TX! This live oak tree is well over 100 years old, having been one of the first trees planted on Texas A&M's massive 5,200-acre campus. The tree has been the site of numerous marriage proposals, weddings and tourist snapshots because of its immense size and its unique drooping branches, many of which rest on the ground. Tradition says that if a couple walks together under the branches of the Century Tree, one of the oldest trees on campus, they will eventually marry. If the proposal takes place under the Century Tree, the marriage is supposed to last forever. Aggies for decades have considered the tree famous. Now, the Texas Forest Service (TFS) agrees that the "Century Oak" in the heart of the Texas A&M University campus warrants "Famous Tree of Texas" designation. The "Famous Tree of Texas" designation is reserved for an elite group of trees that have "witnessed exciting times in Texas frontier history' and are alive today, The Century Tree is one of only three trees added to the registry in the past 40 years.
