Description
My too-short bright summer day in Yoho National Park (British Columbia, Canada) was easily a highlight of my visit to the Canadian Rockies! Here is the confluence of the Kicking Horse River and Yoho River at a place, appropriately named, as the Meeting of the Waters. The two rivers are veritable torrents throughout the summer and this scene of their thundering together is quite impressive. In this view, the Kicking Horse River is descending down the incline in the upper center while the Yoho is coming in from the left around the big boulders. Both rivers are fed from glaciers but the Kicking Horse is clear while the Yoho is gray and silt-ridden. This is due to a series of lakes on the tributaries of the Kicking Horse which act as settling ponds for the silty glacial outwash. True to the First Nations word 'Yoho', used to express amazement or awe by the Cree people, the Kicking Horse and its tributaries drain a spectacular landscape of massive icefields, mountain peaks ranking among the highest in the Canadian Rockies, canyons, gorges, cliffs and avalanche slopes. rapids and waterfalls to braided streams meandering through valley flats. There isn't much of a path to the riverside; you just pick your way down through the trees, undergrowth and rocky landscape, and in my case, hope I don't fall and sprain an ankle since there weren't many people doing the same! The Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks of Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho along with three provincial parks comprise a UNESCO World Heritage site.

What a beautiful, pristine wilderness, Joan -- and the waters cascading down to meet one another create a painting on the surface of the earth.
